Why come to Calavi

Calavi is Cotonou's immediate neighbour. Many Cotonou residents live, study or eat there on weekends. For a visitor, it's the place where you breathe easier: less traffic, more greenery, direct access to Lake Nokoué.

That's also why AFTER6 RIDERS is based here. Almost all our routes start from Calavi: safer roads for evening riding, lake lights, back within 3 hours as a group.

Top 6 activities in Calavi

  1. Take a pirogue to Ganvié: the largest stilt village in Africa, UNESCO-listed.

Lake Nokoué

Lake Nokoué is the geographic heart of Greater Cotonou. It's what separates and connects Cotonou and Calavi. In Calavi it becomes a playground: pirogues, fishing, waterside rides.

The best way to discover it: by bike in late afternoon, when the light softens and pirogues return. Several of our AFTER6 routes follow the lake for 5 to 8 km.

Visiting Ganvié from Calavi

Ganvié is the must-do trip from Calavi. Founded in the 18th century by the Tofinou people, it's now the largest lake village in Africa. All life happens in pirogues: floating market, school, church, mosque.

The classic tour: motorized pirogue from the official jetty, 2 to 3 hours round-trip. For the full guide (prices, times, tips), read our article on Ganvié.

Bike rides in Calavi

Calavi is probably the most pleasant town in Greater Cotonou to ride in the evening: wider roads, calmer traffic from 6pm, lake views. Classic routes are 12 to 20 km.

AFTER6 RIDERS runs weekly night rides from Calavi (bike provided, guide, fresh coconut on arrival). See Bike rides in Calavi and Calavi routes.
